This section provides archived information on the proposed introduction of independent assessments to the NDIS access and planning processes.
On 12 November 2019, former Minister for the NDIS Stuart Robert MP released the government’s plan to improve the NDIS. In his speech to the National Press Club former Minister Robert announced his intention to implement the use of independent assessments – fully paid for by the NDIA – in the access and planning processes.
On 9 July 2021, Minister for the NDIS, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC met with state and territory Disability Ministers. Disability Ministers agreed with the recommendation from the NDIS Independent Advisory Council report that independent assessments do not proceed.
Ministers agreed to work in partnership with people who have a lived experience of disability through the Independent Advisory Council and disability representatives. Together we will work on the co-design of a new person-centred model, consistent with the legislative requirements for assessments as set out under the National Disability Insurance Scheme 2013 Act.
