We’re making changes to the NDIS to make it fairer, easier to navigate, and more flexible to support participants to work towards their goals.
The NDIA is investing in more responsive, stronger systems and fairer processes to ensure the NDIS is sustainable for generations to come, continues to meet demand and deliver lasting impact.
These reforms, shaped with the disability community, are about protecting what works and improving what matters so that the NDIS can support the people who need it today, and for generations to come.
As part of these changes, we had planned to introduce the new way of planning in September 2025, but we have listened to advice from the disability community that more time will improve the delivery of these reforms and minimise disruption.
We are now aiming to introduce changes to planning from mid-2026. The changes will be gradual. We will keep listening and learning so we can improve.
As we get close to moving to the new way of planning, we will share more information to help you understand and prepare for these changes.
In the meantime, participants can continue to use their current plans to purchase NDIS supports.
Since late last year, we have introduced:
- a new definition of NDIS supports to make it easier to understand what NDIS funding can and can’t be used for
- funding periods to support participants to plan ahead and manage their budgets so that it lasts for the full length of plans
- impairment information for new participants who joined the NDIS in 2025 to provide transparency about how a participant met our eligibility criteria.
We are continuing work to deliver other improvements including:
- system enhancements to protect participants and nominees from identity theft
- confirming impairment information for participants who joined the NDIS before 2025
- clearer information and guidance around NDIS supports and other recent changes.
