A friendship renewed, a future embraced

When Sarah moved into her new home in 2025, she discovered she would be sharing it with a familiar face from her childhood.

Months earlier, as Sarah’s sister Mariah and mum Tina explored living options to support Sarah’s independence, they were surprised to learn one of the residents was Glenys, a family friend they had lost touch with years before.

‘We all felt like this reunion was meant to be,’ Mariah said.

Sarah and Glenys first met as children through their families. Although life eventually took them in different directions, their connection was immediate when they met again.

‘When Sarah and Glenys reconnected, it was just the most beautiful thing to see,’ Mariah said. ‘They immediately became really comfortable together.’

The move marked the start of a new chapter for Sarah. With NDIS-funded supports in place, her family quickly noticed positive changes in her confidence and independence.

‘She's now so independent in her own home and loves every second of it,’ Mariah said.

Today, Sarah shares household responsibilities with Glenys, embracing daily routines she rarely took on in the past.

She helps plan meals, prepares food, does her own washing and takes responsibility for all their household grocery shopping.

Mariah said Sarah takes great pride in keeping her home clean and organised, with support workers helping her develop the skills and confidence to manage everyday tasks.

‘We couldn't believe it. Sarah's actually doing things she never did at home,’ Mariah said. ‘When people have the right environment and support, they can do more than you think.’

Sarah has also enjoyed making her space her own. A fan of movies and collectibles, she decorated her room with superhero posters, Star Wars memorabilia and hundreds of action figures.

‘As soon as you walk into her room, you know it's hers,’ Mariah said.

The move has not only increased Sarah's independence but also given her family peace of mind.

‘You can tell she's proud of herself,’ Mariah said. ‘She’s happy, safe and she’s built a life that's truly her own.’
