The NDIS is improving lives.

We all have a role to play in safeguarding participants, their plans and the NDIS from fraudsters. That is why we have zero tolerance for anyone taking advantage or looking to exploit participants or the NDIS.

We want to make sure NDIS funds are used the right way, and everyone connected to the Scheme is doing the right thing.

This is because when people do the wrong thing with NDIS funds it:

  • Puts participant safety at risk.
  • Stops participants from being able to purchase supports they genuinely need.
  • Makes it harder for participants to achieve their goals.
  • Puts additional pressure on carers, family, friends and support networks.
  • Costs participants more to get their outcomes.
  • Could be a crime.

Our goal is to protect participant plans from fraud and non-compliance. If these activities are occurring, participants might not be able to access the supports and services they need, or they receive a lower quality of service.

Through the Fraud Fusion Taskforce, the NDIA and NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission are targeting individuals and businesses intentionally doing the wrong thing, including providers, participants, nominees or carers and serious organised criminal groups.

We know that most people connected to the NDIS do the right thing. We also know that some people try to commit fraud against the Scheme.

When fraud against the NDIS happens, it puts participants and the Scheme at risk.

We are identifying and targeting people who misuse NDIS funds and commit fraud.

When we investigate or take action against fraud or non-compliance, participant safety and wellbeing remains our priority.

Our Fraud Strategy Statement outlines our approach to addressing fraud and non-compliance.

Helping you do the right thing

Addressing fraud and non-compliance in the NDIS is more than monitoring, investigating and prosecuting people who do the wrong thing.

We want to help participants, nominees and providers to understand when they might be making mistakes and connect them with the information and resources they need to do the right thing.

If you have questions around how to use your NDIS funds, your my NDIS contact, NDIS planner or NDIS partner can help you, providing advice and support.

You can also learn more in our would we fund it? guides. They include examples of commonly requested items that we find cause the most confusion.

For each item, we explain how we make reasonable and necessary decisions and provide an overview of whether or not we typically fund these items.

Our guidelines explain what we need to consider and how we make decisions based on the NDIS legislation and rules.

We have a range of resources to help providers do the right thing including guidance on:

  • Making service agreements.
  • Record keeping.
  • Making claims.
  • Managing conflicts of interest.

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission also hasinformation and guidance on their website  to help providers do the right thing including NDIS Practice Standards and the NDIS Code of Conduct
