What the age requirements are
You need to meet the age requirements to become an NDIS participant.
Anyone who applies for the NDIS must be younger than 65 on the day they apply.
What the age requirements are for
The NDIS age requirements are the same for everyone who applies. They're legal requirements from NDIS legislation.
We make decisions about who can be a participant based on these requirements and the proof of age evidence you give us.
Not every person with disability in Australia will be eligible for the NDIS. The NDIS is for people with disabilities who meet all the eligibility requirements to become a participant.
What the age requirements are like
You may be eligible for the NDIS if you:
- are aged 0 to 64 years
- meet the residency requirements
- meet the disability, early intervention requirements or both.
An NDIS partner can help you apply to the NDIS if you are aged 9 to 64 years.
Children younger than 9
Early childhood partners help children younger than 9 and their families to apply for the NDIS through our early childhood approach.
Children younger than 9 who meet the residency requirements can be eligible for the NDIS under the disability requirements, the early intervention requirements or both.
Children younger than 6 with:
- developmental delay may be eligible for the NDIS under the early intervention requirements
- developmental concerns can access supports through our early childhood approach, without becoming an NDIS participant.
After you turn 65
If you aren't an NDIS participant
You aren’t eligible to apply for the NDIS if you're aged 65 and over. Instead, you may be eligible for aged care supports .
Our NDIS partners can also help you learn about other mainstream and community services available in your area.
If you're already an NDIS participant
You can decide if you want to keep using NDIS supports or change to aged care supports. You can’t use NDIS and aged care supports at the same time.
Nothing changes if you choose to continue as an NDIS participant.
You'll have to leave the NDIS if you move into residential aged care after turning 65.
Tip: If you’re a First Nations person and an NDIS participant.
You can choose to access aged care supports from 50 years of age or continue as an NDIS participant.
