The role of GPs and healthcare professionals in helping patients access the NDIS
As a treating healthcare professional, you are often your patient’s first point of contact when they start their NDIS journey.
Your role is important to help them access NDIS supports.
This could include:
- understanding the NDIS eligibility requirements
- connecting your patient with us or referring them to an NDIS partner
- providing evidence of their disability
- providing information about their disability in their application
- helping them understand what supports are available.

Provide evidence of your patient’s disability
Your role as your patient’s treating healthcare professional includes giving evidence of your patient's impairment/s and a description of the evidence-based treatments they’ve received.
You can provide this information by:
- completing ‘Section 2: The Treating Professional’ in the access request form
- attaching relevant reports, letters and/or assessments from other treating professionals
- preparing your own letter or report. It must:
- state your patient’s diagnosis and/or the nature of the impairment resulting in disability
- explain why the condition is unlikely to improve with any known, evidence-based medical treatments
- outline the functional impact of their impairment
- state the types of support required.
You might need to include information from other treating professionals if you don’t have enough information about your patient’s treatments and outcomes or functional impact.
