What is an assistance animal assessment

What an assistance animal assessment is

An assistance animal assessment looks at how an assistance animal will help you with your disability support needs.

The assessment is completed by an assistive technology assessor of assistance animal supports.

What an assistance animal assessment is for

Like all NDIS supports, we only fund assistance animals that meet our funding criteria. The information your assessment provides helps us decide whether the assistance animal will support your needs, and if it meets the NDIS funding criteria.

We can only fund an assistance animal if it’s effective and beneficial based on evidence and is value for money.

We also need to make sure it meets the definition of an assistance animal. We’ll check if the assistance animal has passed the public access test. This is so we know it will be able to support you in the community.

What an assistance animal assessment is like

We have a template to help with assistance animal assessments.

Your assessor doesn’t have to use the assessment template, but the evidence you provide must include all the information described in the template.
