What is a general assistive technology assessment

What a general assistive technology assessment is

This assessment collects information from you and your assistive technology advisor. It explains why your plan needs to include assistive technology.

The assessment should:

  • explain how the assistive technology will help you work towards your goals
  • include information about any previous assistive technology you’ve used
  • explain how the item will work with your other NDIS supports
  • include an approximate cost to buy and maintain the item (for mid-cost items) and a quote (for high-cost items).

If you’ve completed a trial of the assistive technology, please include:

  • details about how you can safely use the item
  • the long-term benefits of having the item as one of your NDIS supports.

Tip: Who can provide evidence for the assessment?

Your advisor can be an allied health practitioner, rehabilitation engineer or other suitably qualified practitioner, depending on the assistive technology you need.

What a general assistive technology assessment is for

We need information and evidence to help us decide if the assistive technology meets NDIS laws and rules. Or if it’s more appropriately funded by other sources. We also need to consider how the assistive technology will be used as part of your overall package of NDIS supports.

For example, having assistive technology that helps you shower independently and safely might mean you need fewer support worker hours to help you bathe.

What a general assistive technology assessment is like

We have a template to guide the assessment and what information we need.

Your advisor doesn’t need to use the template if they don’t want to, but the evidence provided must include all the information the template asks for.
