What medium-term accommodation (MTA) is

Medium-term accommodation (MTA) is a type of funding you can use to live somewhere for up to 3 months, or 90 days. It’s only available in specific circumstances.

What medium-term accommodation (MTA) is for

When you have a home, but it’s not ready or you can’t live there

You might be eligible for MTA if you can’t move into your long-term accommodation. For example, you might be waiting on a vacancy in specialist disability accommodation (SDA), but it isn’t ready for another month.

Or you need somewhere to stay when your home is being renovated with home modifications. For example, you might be waiting on some important changes to be finished so you can use your bathroom.

When you're being discharged from hospital

MTA can help you move out of hospital sooner while you find your long-term home. You can have funding for MTA added to your plan if you’re being discharged from hospital and you’re eligible for SDA, supported independent living, individualised living options, or home modifications. You don’t need to have a confirmed long-term home.

When you’re leaving the justice system

If you’re eligible for SDA and you’re leaving a justice setting, you can access MTA while you wait for a vacancy. Your support coordinator will work with the justice liaison officer to help you find the home and living supports that are right for you.

One-off support

You’ll only receive MTA as a one-off support. This is because you probably won’t need it again once you move into your long-term home.

It isn’t short-term or emergency accommodation

It isn’t emergency housing. You must have a home that you’ll move back into.

It only covers the cost of the accommodation

MTA is a temporary support you can use if you need it. It doesn’t include other living costs such as food, internet or electricity.

It also doesn’t include personal care supports. These are supports you get separately if you need them while you stay in MTA. You can continue to use your plan to pay for your approved NDIS supports.

Tip: There are other living supports available.

There are community and mainstream supports and services that can also help you find something that works for your situation. Talk to your my NDIS contact for more information.
