What capital supports are
Capital supports are one of 4 support budgets in your NDIS plan. Because your plan is based on your individual needs, you might not have funding in all 4 support budgets.
Capital supports are for more expensive assistive technology, equipment, home or vehicle modifications or specialist disability accommodation.
Tip: What support budgets in an NDIS plan are for:
We use support budgets to group and organise the different support categories you can have in your plan.

What capital supports are for
Each support budget is made up of multiple support categories. Your capital supports budget can have NDIS funding in up to 2 support categories:
Assistive technology
This support category will have funding if you need to buy equipment that supports your mobility, independence, personal care, communication and inclusion.
The items you might need to buy with this budget are usually:
- expensive
- things we ask you to give us reports, assessments and quotes for
- the kinds of things you might only buy once, or
- items you already have that need replacing.
Some examples of assistive technology items that would be included in this support category are powered wheelchairs or vehicle modifications.
For older plans, this support category might also include funding to repair the assistive technology you already have, rent equipment, or trial new items before you buy them. This is now a new support category called assistive technology repairs and rental.
Home modifications and specialist disability accommodation (SDA)
This support category will have funding if you need home modifications to help you live more independently, or to build SDA, if you require special housing.
Capital supports are stated
The funding in your capital support categories is not flexible, it is stated. This means you can’t move your funding between support categories.
You must buy the NDIS supports described against each support category in your capital supports budget.
What capital supports are like
If you have capital supports, you’ll find this information included in the ‘Your NDIS funded supports’ section of your NDIS plan.
Your NDIS plan will specify what items or services any assistive technology funding is for, such as maintenance and repairs of hearing aids. Your NDIS plan will also include information if a quote is needed for your assistive technology supports.
